How to measure for a new carpet

fitting a carpet

If you’re thinking of fitting a carpet yourself, you need to make sure that you have accurate measurements. The last thing you want is not having enough carpet, or overpaying and wasting carpet if you order too much.

Here at Rowe Carpets, we would always advise getting your room professionally measured. We can arrange for an estimator to visit you, allowing you to be confident that your quote is correct for your room size. We offer a professional fitting service and can quote for fitting nationally. If you’d prefer to do it yourself, then here are some helpful top tips and things to think about when measuring and fitting a carpet.

1. Use your maths skills!

The first thing we would advise you to do is work out how many square metres your room is. Grab your tape measure to size up the width and length of the area. If your space is square or rectangular, the equation is easy to calculate: width x length = square metres

If you are measuring the same carpet to have in more than one room, then add together each area to get the total amount you need. Always allow room for extra, so add on 5% to your total measurements.

2. Account for the obstacles

It’s important to remember that if your room has additional features such as a chimney breast, alcove, or bay window, you will be required to measure at the longest and widest points. Once you have these measurements, the carpet can be cut to fit around them.

3. Work out if you need a join

A join is needed when your room is wider than the carpet. The pile in all carpets is woven in the same direction, so you may see a difference in shading if you do not lay it correctly.

First, you will need to decide where you want the join to be. We recommend having it where furniture would normally sit. Lay your main piece of carpet first, then one single length above it to fit the size of the room.

4. Double check!

Always take your measurements again (and again!) to ensure total accuracy. If you’re unsure about fitting a carpet, it’s always best to get your space professionally measured.
